Pes Anserine Bursitis

Bursa is a pillow-shaped structure that contains a lubricant whose function is to reduce friction between tendons and underlying elements such as bone. Inflammation of these points is called bursitis. Clinical symptoms of bursitis generally include local pain, swelling, warmness, and movement discomfort.

One of the most commonly involved bursae is located in the knee area and below the pes anserine tendon. Pes Anserine means goose’s foot where as tendon of three muscles merge and connect to the bone. This point is located just below and inside the knee and can cause inflammation, pain, and swelling if injured. It can sometimes be confused with arthrosis or medical collateral ligament injury.

Treatment includes physical modalities such as ice massage as well as anti-inflammatory drugs or topical corticosteroid injections.
