Heel Spurs

Heel spurs (Calcaneal Spur) are a common disease whose main symptom is pain in the heel, especially after rest and starting movement. In the early stages of illness this pain and discomfort resolves after a few minutes of walking and is not continuous.

The main cause of this disease is inflammation of the fascia located in the sole of the foot due to high pressure and mechanical damage. This is called plantar fasciitis. After a while, this inflammation leads to calcium deposition in the site and a thorn-like structure is seen on radiographic studies.

So this bone is secondary to inflammation and not the main cause of the disease. It is interesting to know that heel spurs are seen in some normal people without clinical symptoms; as such they do not require  treatment.

Because of the chronic character of this illness, you do not need to see a bone spur on a radiography to begin treatment. In reality the initial diagnosis and treatment is based on clinical findings.

Recently, focal Corticosteroid injections and anti-inflammatory drugs have played a lesser role in the treatment of this disease, and physical therapy and therapeutic exercise -with or without silicon Gel heel cups – are the principles of treatment.
