Cervical Discopathy

The human neck is made up of seven vertebrae, with a cartilaginous intervertebral disc between the two vertebrae. The nerve roots protruding from the intervertebral foramen of the neck fuse together to form a complex neural network called the brachial plexus, which is responsible for innervating the upper limb ( shoulder and arm to hand).

The cervical disc is very important because of the placing near to the brachial plexus as well as its proximity to the spinal cord. Involving of these discs can leads to damage to the nerve roots that can affect the upper limbs and even lower limbs in severe cases.

The causes of cervical discs are mainly due to excessive pressure on the cervical spine and prolonged bending of the head down, and especially in recent years, long-term use of devices such as mobile phones and tablets or long-term study.

The best way to prevent and treat cervical disc herniation is to get used to not bending your head for a long time and to strengthen your neck muscles through exercise.

Diagnosis of the cervical disc is performed by specialists and most patients are treated by exercise, medication, and correction of the condition. To definitively diagnose the disc, imaging is performed, and to differentiate it from other common problems, EMG-NCV could be necessary.

Hard neck braces generally have no place in the treatment of cervical discs, and the short-term use of soft sponge neck collar can only be helpful as a reminder to prevent the neck from bending.
