Rotator cuff tendinitis

What is the rotator cuff?

The humerus is connected to the shoulder by muscles and tendons. Four of these muscle-tendon groups form a cap that controls arm rotation and stabilizes the shoulder, called the rotator cuff. Inflammation and swelling of these tendons lead to pain and limitation of shoulder movement. Rotator cuff inflammation usually occurs over a long period with repeated irritation in the shoulder area. This condition is more common in people who have abnormal bony anatomy in the shoulder, people who have loose joints, and people who do heavy or repetitive lifting above shoulder level.

Rotator cuff tendonitis diagnosis?

A proper physical examination of the shoulder by a medical professional is the first step. X-rays are useful to rule out other causes of shoulder pain, such as broken bones, arthritis, and other bone diseases. If the patient suspects a cuff tear, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to diagnose it.

Rotator cuff tendonitis treatment?

Ice: Placing ice packs on the shoulder reduces inflammation and pain. Ice should be applied twice a day for at least twenty to thirty minutes.

NSAIDs: These drugs can also reduce pain and swelling. These medications may have side effects and should only be taken as directed.

Steroids: If other treatments fail, steroid therapy may be used to reduce inflammation and pain.

Surgery needed?

Rotator cuff tendonitis without a cuff tear usually does not require surgery, but if pain persists for several months after these treatments, surgery is an option.

What is rehabilitation for rotator cuff tendinitis?

The injured shoulder should be rested to reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapy is then used to gently stretch and strengthen the shoulder to maintain a full range of motion. You can find these exercises and do them at home using the Rehbex mobile app.
