Ankle Sprain

The ankle is one of the most complex and important joints in the body that is responsible for transferring weight from body to the ground. As a result, the joint is under constant pressure and is easily damaged.

The ankle is protected by several ligaments and tendons, and if the ankle slips inward or outward, these elements can become stretched or even torn, manifesting as pain, swelling, hemorrhage, and local bruising. It is called ankle sprain.

Fractures and bone problems are easier to diagnose with a regular X-Ray, but an MRI is necessary to diagnose soft tissue damage.

In cases of acute ankle injury, using ice for the first 48 hours of the injury is helpful, and after that time, a hot compress can be used.

Using a splint or ankle brace to immobilize the joint for a short time or to support the joint while moving can help to reduce the pain and swelling. For people who frequently suffer from an ankle sprain, it is recommended to avoid high heels and the use of boots or half-boots.

Due to the complexity of the joint and the constant pressure on it, the treatment of tendon or soft tissue lesions is often difficult and time consuming, however, doing exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the ankle plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of lesions of this joint.
